Can I do a swap

Asked by Colin Dec 18, 2017 at 07:37 PM about the 1995 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Can I swap a 1999 gmc Jimmy motor and tranny into my
1995??? I'm having missing and sputtering issues in my 95
and can't figure them out. I've changed fuel pump spider
injectors cam shaft sensor and timing chain... the whole
timing setup is dead center where it should be... nothing
has worked and I can buy motor and tranny for 400 bucks
with 125,000 miles in good running condition

If you swap over donor engines ECM you may have to disable VATS on your truck, but if the two engines are identical you may be able to keep your current ECM without any issues. Does seem a little pricey and a lot of work for a high-mileage engine swap tho.

I don't know what motors you have in either vehicle, but if they are the same (ie 4.3) then I see no reason for the swap not to work. The common issue to deal with in engine swaps in newer vehicles is the engine computer, it needs to be flashed to a factory setting matching the new engine, taking into consideration gear ratios or tranny gears and rear end, engines induction system, etc. IF the donor engine has major redesigns, or tranny/rear end are geared much differently, then the old computer won't work with it well, may result in running rough. IF the donor engine were IDENTICAL in every way, then the old computer would work with it. Of course the engine computer also holds other programmed variables such as mileage, VIN info, and anti-theft system, which is where swapping computers means having to reflash and program for anti-theft. If I'm not mistaken, you have a VATs era truck, which I believe can be disabled as opposed to the expense of reprogramming. Go join a GMC Jimmy or S-10/Blazer forum where members post guidelines on such swaps, they'll have way more information on the subject and can walk you though it. This forum is very limited in what type of responses we can give and not suited for detailed instructions.
