Cranks but won't start with new fuel pump.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So we have the 1995 Chevy Camaro, standard V6.
It cranks but wont start it had all the signs of
needing a new fuel pump so we replaced it, it
worked for about a day and a half, then started
doing the same thing. It cranks but wont turn
over. We are replacing the fuel filter now. Its a
used car so I would say these two things needed
done anyways but Im not sure it is the main
problem. If we put the fuel filter in (we already
put the new fuel pump in) and it still doesnt work,
any suggestions to what it might be?Mar 06,

Sounds like you forgot to replace the fuel pump relay, it should be done every time the fuel pump is replaced.

Did you check for spark? These vehicles were notorious for ignition control module failures. Hope that helps! Jim

So no he didn't change the fuel pump relay. He went ahead and left the fairly new fuel filter in that was already in and didn't put a new fuel filter in, but kept it just in case. His gas hand doesn't work either and apparently it was out of gas do to a leak. He fixed the leak, put gas in an it's working for now but I told him I believe the main problem is still not found and fixed. Idk if this matters but he said that the previous owner started but did not finish or give details on what all or how much he did but previous owner said they started updating the wiring putting different than what the original make had idk what that means oh yeah he also said (meaning previous owner) he was working twords making it all electronic? Idk what all he done where he stopped that's pretty much all we know but surely that could make a difference right? Maybe not exactly in some of this problem or at all but facing future existing problems would this be something that could make a difference or have a influence or would it be relevant to anything that they started doing this process I tried to describe.

Oh boy! What you described as "updating the wiring" sounds like a nightmare to me! Now sometimes a design change is made and the plug(s) going to the fuel pump will have to be changed. If that's the case the new plug, or pigtail as it's called, will be supplied with the new fuel pump. Most likely the reason the gas gauge doesn't work is because the sending unit, which is part of the fuel pump assembly, is not hooked up or not hooked up correctly. Another thing to be aware of is since this is a 1995 model it could be either OBD I or OBD II. You need to find that out which it is. Personally, I'd get it running again and sell it. Sounds like you're going down a rabbit hole of never ending electrical problems! Good luck to you!! Jim
