Engine diagram for coolant temperature gauge sensor

The sensor in the diagram should be only for temp gage. One wire connector, Key on, should be voltage on that wire, not sure how much. If no voltage, the gage won't work. Maybe problem with wiring circuit or instrument cluster? In the old days, we would take connector loose, ground that wire to metal part of engine, the temp gage should go to moving. I don't like to peg an analog gage.
