how do u know if the engine locks up after running out of oil?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2007 PT Cruiser touring edition. Knocked a
hole in oil filter. Mechanic says the motor is
gone. No oil. Would the motor give any
signs before it just stops? Weird noises,
running hot, anything? It simply quit 2 miles
down the road. Said timing was in tact. Just
spent $1200 on timing 3 weeks ago.
