i have a 96 sl it has a oil leak you cant see it but its on the back side of the engine through the top it leaks when the engine runs for awhile

Okay. Thats a statement. Whats your question? If you want to know where its leaking, look a little harder. Is it by the valve cover? Is it by the oil filter?

valve cover gasket is leaking or the rear main seal is leaking.it will be one of the two.

Well check the VC first. Clean up the area back there with some carb clean and see if its leaking.

Check your oil sending unit / oil pressure switch. If it is leaking only when the engine is running and at a fairly quick Pace, chances are it's the oil sending unit that is on the back side of the motor between the motor and firewall right above the backside of starter. It is a small part that screws in and out of the block and has wires snapped on to the top of it.
