What is wrong with my '98 SW1?

Asked by Mary Jul 07, 2015 at 10:28 PM about the 1998 Saturn S-Series 4 Dr SW1 Wagon

Question type: General

I have a 1998 sw1. It runs really well till
recently. It's an automatic but it seems like
some days when I step on the gas it doesn't
shift properly and at times gets almost to
the red on the tac before shifting to the next
gear.  Other times it seems to have little to
no pick up or power when the gas is
applied. What is wrong with it? Could it be
something as little as a clogged fuel filter or
maybe some transmission fluid is needed?
I am afraid of driving it because I don't want
to mess it up. What is going on with this
car?

what's the mileage on the car and have you ever had the transmission fluid changed filter replaced you can start there. I would use Mobil 1 trans syn fluid I used it on my SC2 and shifts smoother but these transmissions always shift funny this is my third SC2 and all shift funny like they can't find the gear sometimes but they just operate that way?

How's your account, fan, air filters if any, if SC2 has about the same as SL1,SL2 all fluids should be non- selynthetic as possible like older models Ford's ect... thinner oils and wrong fluids will kill your engine and functioning. Also check your wiring sensors might be needing a engine or radiator flush through one, sparkplugs &wires

Check alternator since you have an automatic the clutch is also built-in. You will do better getting a used on for around 60.-70.00 depending on how you want to spend. Should work like a charm
