2002 SC2 Saturn 3 door coupe 5 speed manual transmission

Asked by B36Peacemaker Jan 08, 2021 at 11:16 PM about the 2002 Saturn S-Series 3 Dr SC2 Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have only had it for about a year and already did a repair on the
transmission because the first time it broke the pin that kept the diff spider
gears inline broke and caused the transmission bell housing to have a small
crack on the outside but on the inside was a much bigger crack so me and my
grandfather fixed it by aluminium welding it back together and then smoothing
it of to where the gears would not catch or grind on the weld but then later on
in the year it did the same thing but this time it made the crack bigger from
what we can tell but we know for a fact that we both put in all new parts, pins,
and bearings, so we dont know why this keeps happening so if anyone would
help me I would be happy to hear what you have to say.
and sorry have no photos to show

Scrap it! My guess is you are not setting up the gear clearance correctly.

I agree with FOR. You really should replace the bell housing, and or all the loose and worn parts inside that caused the issue in the first place. If there is over 100K miles on the transaxle , which I think there is, your due for a rebuild or replacement anyway. A broken Pin is a common issue that causes the cracking. Installing a new pin with worn parts is asking for trouble, which you found out. The vehicle is worth around $1200 if the trans was working properly, scrap value in it's current state. FOR is being a voice of reason, because the cost involved is far more than the car is worth. Unless you really like tinkering with cars, go for it.
