What happens if I don't replace my air pump?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My check engine light came on in my 2002 Saturn SL and the P0410 code is what it
kicked out. It looks like my air pump no longer works. It is an old car and I'm wondering
what happens if I don't replace the air pump? Will it ruin my engine, or am I ok to not
replace my air pump? Thanks.

We do have emissions tests. Is that the only reason to have a working air pump? Will not having one hurt my car?
