What could cause a loud front end whining noise on my 2007 AWD Vue?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2007 Vue AWD V6 started to make a front end whining noise between 25mph - 60mph. At first I thought maybe wheel bearings but that checked ok. Garage did replace universal joint on the drive shaft because it was sloppy. The noise loudness is increasing with time. Was told it could be a carrier bearing and have an appt. to have it checked. Not sure what a carrier bearing is. I'm concerned about driving it since I am not able to get it in for another week. Any danger in driving?
