How does the 4x4 auto work? Does the transmission have to be in park?

4x4 automatic kicks in when a tire starts to spin more than other tires. It is useful on dry pavement or when there is a mix of dry asphalt and ice or snow. To engage it all you do is turn the knob to the 4x4 auto setting. 4 low is engaged by stopping and putting the car in neutral while stepping on the brake. Your owners manual will also tell you how to use the 4 wheel drive system.
