Starting

Asked by GuruS6LM Apr 18, 2017 at 08:34 PM about the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LTZ 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I randomly need a jump to start the truck.  Lights,
bells and whistles all turn on when key turns over,
but no matter the temperature outside, if the truck
sits for a few hours, it needs to be jumped. Then it
starts right up. Alternator?

Yes, that would be a good idea to have checked to see if it is working. It would be a good idea to have the battery checked also. You could have this done at an auto parts store, only takes a few minutes.

Possibly a weak battery or a parasitic battery drain.

ok..the first thing to do is clean all battery cables and ground.fully charge the battery and then have it load tested..for weak ,bad cell....its free at pepboys/checkers/autozone. THE CHEATING WAY TO DO IT AT HOME IS CHARGE IT UP WITH A BATTERY CHARGER..OR JUMP START AND THEN CHECK THE BATTERY VOLTAGE TO SEE IF THE ALY,IS PUSHING MORE THAN 12.6 VOLTS TO THE BATTERY OR EVEN 13.5...SO WITH THE BATTER CHARGED ! CHECK BATTERY VOLTS 12.1 12.6 WHO KNOWS THEN TURN ON LIGHTS AND TRY TO START IT WHILE YOU READ THE BATTERY VOLTAGE..IF ITS UNDER 10.5 VOLTS THE BATTERY IS BAD THAT WAS THE LOAD TEST... OR IF THE HEAD LIGHTS DIM WAY DOWN THE BATTERY IS BAD.. YOU MUST HAVE THE BATTERY LOAD TESTED WITH A FULL CHARGE IF OK..THEN YOUR PROBLEM IS A SYSTEM DRAW..SUCKING JUICE FROM THE BATTERY WHEN IT SITS AROUND..WE CAN GET INTO THAT NEXT...*** I WOULD JUST BUT A NEW BATTERY IN IT BECAUSE THE BATTERY HAS BEEN UP AND DOWN AND DEADAND HAVE IT (VATED)..CHECKS BATTERY VOLTAGE BEFORE AND AFTER ATHE LOAD TEST ALT. VOLTS/AMPS OUT STARTER DRAW IF THE CHARGING SYSTEM IS OK/GOOD THEN THATS WHEN YOU CHECK FOR A DRAW

Of course Kelly... Thank you... I know something is pulling the power out of this monster when it sits but I also turn everything off that has a power button attached to it... Including the blowers for the a.c./heat vents... (Yes, they actually have a power button and not a dial) I think I'm just going to say screw it and replace the battery... And then make the guy who sold it to me pay for it.
