HVAC fan motor does not work?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My fan quit working on my 2007 Trailblazer.  No warning just stopped
working.  I figured motor went bad, removed and checked on workbench.
Motor runs fine.  Put test light on purple wire coming from resistor pack and
had juice.  This is where things went south.  Because I could not get the clip
off of the fan motor housing, I cut the wires figuring I'd splice them back
together.  When testing for current the other wires I had removed from the
lower panel feel from above and I shorted the motor wires.  Fried the fuse,
the 40Amp.  I replaced the fuse and spliced the motor wires together.  Now
the fan runs even with the ignition switched off.  Did I just fry the resistor
pack and need to replace it or is the problem in the switch on the climate
controls?  This is a model that has the auto temp control with digital readout.

The resistor was your problem to begin with. This problem is so common, it should be a recall. When replacing, replace the pigtail too, these tend to melt internally causing problems. You mentioned a very important piece of info....auto climate control. These are not called resistors, it's a blow motor control module. Manual controls are called "blower motor resistor". They look the same as the resistor, but are very different, one will not work for the other. Make sure you get one that is for auto controls.

Thanks for the reply. You obviously know more than the people working at the auto parts outlets. Half the people I talked to tried to sell me the resistor for models without auto temp control. Even the few listing that specified "control module" either did not have the same replacement part number or it was for a different model year. Of course no one allows you to return an electrical part once it has been hooked up and you can't tell if it is right until you hook it up. Nice racket! I finally found a video that explained Chevy made an upgrade, now I understand why the part I took out doesn't look like the part they have listed. I'm still not 100% certain the part I ordered is going to work, but it's on the way and I will know in a few days. This car has been something else. Almost every time I get in it the right side mirror has to be readjusted. It moves all the way to the right and then keeps "clicking" like it is jammed until I readjust it. The power seat takes vacations and just won't work. The radio has feedback in one speaker that is obviously a short bc the noise increases with rpm's. The dash air vents will stop working from time to time and I go through all of the reset procedures of disconnecting the battery and fuses and restarting and let it recalibrate. Then one day when I turn it to defrost the dash vents won't work when I turn it back from defrost. I had an 06 that did the same thing. I think they just put too much electronic equipment in those LT models for the onboard computer. I also get the same "check engine" light like everyone else gets. I had an 06 that was an LS and it would do the same thing. Light would come on for a few days or a couple of weeks, then go off for 2 months or more and then come back on again. Sometimes it was bc the gas cap wasn't tightened all the way, sometimes it was "just because". But it's a damned fine ride and a great SUV. Pulls my 16' V-Guide and 40 hp Merc without a sputter. Goes through mud and snow better than my F150 ever did. Crying shame they stopped making them, can't figure out why they would ruin such a winner. Thanks again for replying. You helped a lot. Just wish everyone had your knowledge.

I ordered the blower motor control module off of Amazon. It said it was for "Auto AC controls" and of course when I open it up the instruction sheet says it is NOT for Auto AC control. Now what?
