Asked by John Jan 14, 2019 at 12:29 AM about the 2007 Dodge Charger SE RWD

Question type: Car Customization

I’m interested in swapping out my 3.5 for a
5.7 hemi. Now, before we get started, I want
to address all the people who start off these
forums with, “Just trade it in durrrr.” I, like a
lot of folks, am interested in doing these
things and what it takes to get these things
done. I think A LOT of really good info and
possible videos have never been made (and
never will be made) because people
discouraging others to swap out.

Now that that’s out of the way, I have a 2007
Dodge Charger SE 3.5L V6 RWD that I ended
up rebuilding myself. Long story short, #2
spun out, learned how to rebuild engines,
flipped off the dealership for telling me it
would cost $6,000 to have them rebuild it for
me. I bought all the tools I need, and rebuilt it
myself. This sparked my interest in how all
this works.

I have a 2006 Dodge Magnum RT 5.7L Hemi
AWD I want to put into my charger. BOTH are
automatic transmissions for the record. The
donor car was purchased from an auction for
only $50 bucks, engine turns, good
compression all around, and was rear ended,
so all the suspension is fully intact. I will have
to buy a new muffler, but shit. $50 for a Hemi
and everything else is a steal of a deal.

Now, I know how to pull engines and rebuild
them; but I’m not as experienced as other
mechanics out there. I need to know, what
needs to be pulled? I know both have
Independent front and rear suspensions, so
pulling them won’t be that hard. I know that
I’ll need to pull the engine, but I want the
specifics of everything I’ll need to pull from
the donor car.

I’ll make very detailed videos of this swap,
and answer a lot of questions people have
about swapping out a RWD for an AWD. I
have both the time, and resources to
complete this swap; just looking for some
guidance. Otherwise, I’ll just scrap the car
and flip the parts for profit.

Looking for experienced mechanics opinions
and feedback on completing this. Like I said,
I’m good with a wrench, and I’m not afraid of
hard work to get what I want. I’m sure others
are out there (the silent population) who are
dying to know if and more importantly, HOW
this is possible. I’d like to share this
opportunity, so if others in the future come
across the same opportunity to swap, they
will know the steps and what’s required to
complete both a V6 to V8 swap, AND a RWD
to AWD swap. Thanks to all you seasoned
mechanics in advance, you make these kinds
of things possible.

lots of measurements especially if you want to make it an AWD Charger strip donor car of all drivetrain parts computers brake systems everything down to empty shell as you may need everything and better to have and not need it than to toss it and find out you needed it after all then remove all drivetrain and suspension from charger replace all drivetrain components with all donor drivetrain components use all suspension parts that bolt to chargers original mounting points this means you may have to custom build the suspension using parts from both cars if measurements are different you will need to use the front carriage from the magnum in order to mount the front differential unless by some miracle the chargers front carriage has the mounting holes to mount front differential to it this is were your custom skills get tested as well as your mind and patience remember measure twice and it goes a lot faster and easier the front and rear gear ratios have to be the same or your trans will not like it and break thus the need of complete drive train from donor the only thing you use from charger is the body mainly so whatever you do dont cut any wires unplug and keep all wiring harnesses from both cars just remember what you dont need is able to be sold later have fun and send pics of car when done TommyStarchild@sc.rr.com
