My friend hydroplaned and wrecked her car,and it ended up on its side with
motor running. Does this engine have a switch that shuts it down to keep
from ruining it?

It depends on how long it ran while the vehicle was on it's side as to whether the engine was damaged. Most vehicles have a safety switch or device that cuts the fuel off in a severe accident. It sound like the one in this particular situation did not activate if the engine was still running.
