Question type: Maintenance & Repair

07 pontiac torrent steering wheel shakes when driving over  40 -50 mph then
traction control light comes on. What could this be. I took it to a mechanic he
checked the brakes, rotors, brake hoses, took it for test drive but found nothing.
What could this be.

If it is at one speed, I usually find it to be front end alignment....go check that and balance your tires is my suggestion. When was the last time you did them? Have you hit a pot hole lately?? Hope this helps

Seems under further investigation you are not alone. I found two reasons you have this vibration. If it is not the tires or alignment.....then try check out the front end wheel bearing hubs. At first glance mine looked typical for a car with 64k mileage on it. Upon closer inspection it was obvious the entire wheel bearing assembly and mount assembly was completely destroyed by corrosion. The bearing hub on the right wheel took 5 1/2 hours to pound off and it took another 2 1/2 hrs to remove the left bearing hub. Cost for AC Delco OEM parts; $440.00 dollars. Labor; $600.00 dollars. Approx. 50 miles have been put on the car since the change out of the wheel bearing hubs and I can feel no low frequency vibration in the steering wheel and there is zero whining noise in the 50mph-70mph range.

The last thing I would check is the drive shaft. From a friend of mine. The service manager and tech told him he was positive that the rear drive shaft needs to be sent in and rebalanced for $150. I have never heard of a drive shaft becoming out of balance before? I do know that the drive shaft was very rusty on the outside, so I suppose it could have thrown a balancing weight.

Check the front hubs. There was a bulletin on them.

I just purchased a use '06 Pontiac Torrent with about 140K miles on it. I was experiencing a similar vibration issue, although mine occurred once I exceeded 25mph and it grew louder as I accelerated. The sound and vibration would then decrease as I slowed down to a stop. I took the vehicle into the mechanic and they determined that I was in dire need of a new wheel hub assembly on the front driver side. The plate had corroded and the whole assembly was generally on its last legs. The repair, including labor, cost me about $450 for an entirely new wheel hub assembly. I almost cried when I got the car back because the ride was so smooth and QUIET! Hah. I would definitely suggest having the wheel hub assembly (bearings and all) checked out, as that is apparently a big thing with these torrents and their crossover design. And, as always, check the alignment - especially if you notice your steering wheel vibrating as well, as this was a symptom of a slightly fractured axle on an old car of mine.
