Pump Sound when key is turned on

Asked by tdl29773 Mar 11, 2013 at 02:16 PM about the 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit 4-Door

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought this car, and when key is turned on, there is a noise from behind the glove box that sounds like an air pump. It runs for about 10 seconds and then stops. Some times it makes this noise serveral times. Starts making noise then stops, and starts again in a few more seconds. Is there a fuel pump in this area?

Usually the fuel pump is submerged in the tank. It could be a air pump if the car has auto leveling.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I just bought a 2008 volkswagen rabbit myself and it makes the same noise as well when I first start the car and stops shortly afterwards.

It usually makes the noise when I change a setting on the air conditioning controls
