hard to start 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan 97,000 miles

Asked by REMCG Apr 03, 2014 at 10:26 AM about the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan has become hard to start. Used to be on the first turn of the key it would start right up but recently it takes what seems like a long time cranking to start and then runs rough for a minute or less before smoothing out. In addition there will be a strong smell of gas or a sweet smell of gas(hard to describe) after a hard start. We also got the code p 0300 and p 0301 so we changed out the plugs and the plug wires and it seems to have helped slightly but not much. One thing to is that once it has started if you turn it off and immediately try to start it, it will start on the first crank but once it sits for even a few minutes it is again difficult to start. Also when we fill up with gas it will start on the first turn as well. any ideas?

I have same problem, exactly same problem on Dodge 2006 Grand Caravan. I replaced spark plugs and wires. still code P0300. Is there anyone to know this problem?

my best guess is the same as with my 2005 grand caravan there is an anti flow back valve in the fuel line at the fuel pump that has failed. so when the car has been running and recently shut off the pressure is still in the fuel lines. but if you wait a short time and try to start it the fuel lines need to re pressurize. so you can replace the fuel pump or you can turn the key to the on position for a few seconds before trying to start the vehicle. that would be KOEO (key on engine off) while the lines pressurize this will alleviate the hard start and the sweet smell of gas being dumped into your exhaust manifolds

I'm having same problem with mine. I would unhook battery and next day hook it up and itd start. Put on alternator and new battery and wont start without a jump. Have to have it jumped every time now and unhooking cables to battery don't work no more. I don't understand it. If I figure it out ill update.

I have the same problem. Changed fuel pump. Fuel line. Still problems. Changed o2 sensor. Then it started back firing.... just changed spark plugs and now no gas smell. Starts right away and no back fire... the fuel pump was cracked and so was the main fuel line that was the smell. The rough start was the o2 sensor. And then when i got that fixed the backfire started because the plugs were bad. So i dont know if that helps. But it helped me. With my 06 dodge caravan. Also was told it would be a good idea to clean the catalyc converter but i havent done that yet....

Exact same problem. Turned out to be a sticky fuel injector. It would stick open, thereby dumping gas into the affected cylinder during cold start. This resulted in flooding of that cylinder during cold cranking. It accounted for the longer than usual cranking, and also the raw gas smell. Once the engine would reach operating temp, all would be well, as the heat allowed the bad injector to function normally. Please people, stop throwing your money to replace parts and hoping for the best. Replacing a fuel pump? If they go bad, your car won't start at all, and if it did eventually start, it wouldn't suddenly start working fine after a brief engine warm-up, since the pump resides inside the gas tank at the opposite end of the car. Bad plugs typically will run rough all the time, and wires can easily be tested by misting them with water while the engine is running. Arcing will occur if the insulation is cracked. Today's plugs and wires are in the extreme minority as culprits for engine problems.

Mine is hard to start and when it turns over, does not stay running. Adding more gas to tank or use od starter fluid seem to help some. I need fluid for chance if startibg but just dies. To me it acts as if not receiving fuel. Fuel filter? Anti back drain? I have replaced fuel pump and pcm because of pump not working and codes suggesting pcm. Am i still missing anything?
