Serpentine Belt Squealing

Asked by Ben Jan 16, 2013 at 05:54 PM about the 2007 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently replaced the serpentine belt
on my Altima at roughly 85,000 miles.
Ever since the belt was replaced I
have had a squealing problem. It only
occurs when the car is first turned on
when it is cold. It only lasts for
roughly 45 seconds and does not
occur again unless the engine is
given time to get cold again. I have
tried belt dressing and it did not help
at all. There is no excessive wear on
the belt. I thought it might be the
tensioner, but my father, who is a
diesel mechanic, informed me that
the tensioner is fine.

Alternator drag. When you start it, the alternator works extra hard putting a lot of strain on the belt, and after those 45 seconds, the drag is reduced. You may have an alternator problem, it should not squeal even after what I explained
