Actually, There are shops (pros) that can and do install Doors or removable panels built into the floor of the pan just above the fuel sending unit. No do not go out there and cut holes in your car. It has to be done correctly and of course in the correct place. If you hit the Fuel line or cut threw tank (KaBoom)..It must remain air tight to keep exhaust & gas fumes out, water. pest ect., it must not reduce the strength of the panel. you have to know what your doing and know how to fabricate metal and know how to seal it.

It welds in place and on non flat surface of a car it has raised and lowered steel panel you have to weld in some cut outs from the original taken out panel that fill in the spots where the floor is lower in the groves and weld to body panel and to side lip of the mounting ring not the upper flat part of the ring that the lid mounts to, grind off any weld that overlaps the side onto the flat area (You also have to grind off the side of the ring and auto body paint before welding) so you can get a good seal on the upper part of the ring, you can use old style copper gasket maker or the gasket that comes with it, have to order it separate, to seal the lid to the ring.
But since its something you'll never have to do again, just drop the fuel tank, change the pump, and put the tank back in.

I am on the 4th one in my 92 blazer.
But as you well know that is a highly unusual situation.
