I recently had the rack and pinion replaced on my 2007 Grand Prix GXP and when the car is idle or stopped you cannot turn the wheel. What is the problem?

They replaced the rack and pinion 3 times and you cannot turn the wheel if the car is idle or stopped. When you give it gas it will turn. The mechanic is baffled by this and so am I. Can anyone help?

A call to any GM dealership will tell you whether there are outstanding recalls on your car. I'm sure any GM dealership can sort out the problem even if it is not recall related. Even though it will be more expensive this one may require a trip to the dealership for repair as well. A mechanic who just keeps blindly replacing the same part over and over is clearly operating beyond his skill level.

I had the same problem after replacing my power steering pump and it was just air in my power steering lines. My husband put some miles on the car and the air worked it’s way out. Now I can turn the wheel no problem at anytime.

Hello: I have problem with my car Pontiac Grandprix year 2000 3.1 engine with rack pinion I heard they have recall on this.
Call any GM dealership. They can look up your vehicle’s vin and see if there is any outstanding recall orders on your car. But don’t count on it. Your car is 22 years old. Things do wear out.
