Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I have a 2007 Jeep Grand
Cherokee and it was
overheating first to put a
water pump on it then I put a
radiator in it then I took the
thermostat out it ran fine for
about 4 days . Then I drove it
for about 2 hours on the
interstate and when I got
back into town and slow
down it started running hot
and has been doing the same
thing ever since I put water in
it and it runs fine on
Interstate for about an hour
an hour and a half then when
I get into town and starts
running hot again what else
could be making it run hot?

You have air trapped in the system. Did you bleed the system after the work?

Bleed air from system like this. Remove cap from overflow tank fill with antifreeze to full mark leave cap off and start vehicle and let idle you will notice level in tank will start to rise this is normal once thermostat starts to open level in tank will drop add more antifreeze to full mark then put cap back.

I don't have a thermostat we took it out but I was told to bleed the air out of the system you unscrew the screw in the top radiator hose and let the air out.

Those are all classic symptoms of a radiator fan not coming on while driving at low speeds. At high speeds you don't need the fan at all. Check see if it comes on while (before) overheating. As a test, it should run 100% when A/C is on.

Thanks Firebird 338 Hornet 2497 and cjsrus for your suggestions. But it turned out that I had a blown head gasket . I bought a bottle of head gasket sealer for about $35 at the parts store , put it in and that worked . It's not overheating anymore . Now I have other problems please look in the questions section and see if you can tell me what's going on with my transmission ? Thank you guys .
