Question type: Maintenance & Repair

once i'm on the highway going a
certain speed my car will start to
decelerate while i'm still pressing on
the gas pedal, and the rpm will just
race. then when it hits between 50
and 60 it will start to accelerate again.
i'm just not sure what's going on or if
there is something i should take a
look at.

when was the last time you changed your oil and had a tune up. My car was doing that and when i did an oil change and minor tuneup i twas corrected...the oil may be a little low or very dirty (this is just based on my experience)

her problem has nothing to do with the oil. the oil is only a lubricant. as for the tune up correcting the issue its more likely that disconnecting the battery before the tune up corrected your issue because it reset the Throttle Position Sensor and will most likely correct hers.

disconnecting your battery would only cause more problems, it sounds as tho maybe your trans is slipping? next time our driving at this starts to do this very quick at lightly tap on the brake without letting off the gas, see if this changes anything, by doing so will disingage the torque converter, i would start there, its quick easy and cheap place to start

Jeff please elaborate on why disconnecting the battery is going to cause more problems. Also in case you were not aware a faulty or bad TPS is not uncommon for Jeeps. Just check the recall notices and the Jeep forums if you doubt this.

might not cause more problems but its not gonna do anything either, unless you touch the two terminals together for 15sec then this will reset all computers, i work at a chrysler dealership yes i know tps' were an issue, but it sounds as tho the converter in not engaging correctly and you will be able to test it by what i said earlier, i didnt mean to insult you if i did i apologize
