Even with carfax, go have car checked by your own mechanic,to to know for sure,carfax keeps records of wrecks,and resale,but not a lot of the up keep on it,this will give you a better confidence in your purchase of it,and the more you know about the up keep on the car the better,good luck.

These aftermarket warranties are not really warranties at all, more like an insurance policy. The company knows the average cost of repairs for every car over X amount of time, doubles or triples that number and that is the cost of policy. Then they add so many exclusions and deductibles, you really have to read the 'fine print' IMO not worth the cost. But try negotiating say a 60 day, 90 day, warranty in to the deal. That way you have at least some protection if there is something not readily apparent. But also take TST's advice and spend a few bucks to have it looked at, compression test, maybe even an oil analysis.

Don't waste any time with your own mechanic. Bring the car to Porsche NA for a pre purchase inspection. It is a service they provide and with the cooperation of the seller you can get a report from Porsche about the car and know exactly what to expect. Most dealers perform this service for approximately $ 350.00 and check the dealers website for service discount coupons sometimes you can save an additional 10%. The inspection is typically performed at the buyers expence and can save you thousands in unexpected items a local mechanic might miss. You will get a report on paint, electrical, and mechanical including break wear. Tire treads , etc. Good luck if well maintained they are wonderful cars, highly engineered to last a very long time.

They are pretty robust, well engineered cars where little goes wrong. There are a couple of fairly common issues with them (rear main oil seal and IMS bearing), but most will have been rectified by now. These later M96 engine types may not have the replaceable IMS bearing, but the engine could have been replaced earlier in its life. The failure rate was not very high, under 10% I believe. Get a PPI by a Porsche specialist, they may uncover a host of minor issues like cracked plastic oil tubes, weeping gaskets etc that you can use to negotiate a better price.

For this type, services and repaired MUST be only done dy dealership. No service record from dealership equal no purchase.

I disagree with Toitoine. There are many independent Porsche specialists who do the same or better quality work than the dealership for lower prices. As long as the car has records to show it has been properly maintained and it passed PPI, why not buy it? They are also not difficult to work on yourself. There are plenty of websites with DIY tutorials for just about every job on the car. I have replaced my own clutch, IMS bearing, spark plugs, AOS, rear main seals and all kinds of other work on a 2004 Carrera 4S

I hate to admit this... I have never purchased a 911 with a Warranty. Start with the basics. Is it leaking oil. Can you feel all the syncros shifting. Wind it up in second gear... let off the accelerator... Then to the floor, check rear view mirror for white smoke. Currently, I have an 06 S and 02 Turbo. Bullet proof cars. Also, if you purchase private you have tax money as a back up to fix the headaches. Get a PPI. And, a test drive would be nice before purchase.
