here is what you should see with the engine on TDC (top dead center) this is for a 2.4L engine...also this is a zero clearance engine meaning that if the timing belt broke while the engine was running the pistons will hit the valves...// and what you may be hearing is the engine with no compression

So Moparjohn, I was told this was a non-interference engine. I'm sure you have more experience with this engine than I do. The vehicle was being driven when the belt broke. I am pretty darn sure I have the timing right. The noise that don't sound right could be the engine not having the right compression due to possible bent valves?
hi sorry to hear that ..do you have a compression tester? ....that would let you know for sure

No I don't. My friend that has been helping me with the job does so we will be trying this soon. any advice for checking compression? how many PSI to look for? Thanks for your help so far Moparjohn! it has been very informative.

any tips how to get the timing belt installed again? I cant for the life of me remember how i got it on the last time. going by the book i need about another 1/8 to 1/4 inch to get the belt over the tension pulley.
