Smoking Sebring ragtop

Asked by Paul May 03, 2012 at 10:36 PM about the 2006 Chrysler Sebring Touring Convertible FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2006 Sebring Convertible, 79k, 6 cyl.,blows white smoke when I start, but only after I have been driving fast  If I
keep it under 40 mph, almost none. I went through 2 quarts driving about 75 for 120 miles. Burns no coolant, but will
blow smoke upon acceleration after cruising after highway driving. No problems if I drive like I'm 80 years old.

Couple things come to mind on this, Your piston rings, valve guides or PCV system. An easy way to get some idea on rings is to take off the oil filler cap with the engine running. If you get a lot of air (blowby) you have some bad rings. The best test is the vacuum test as follows....... Here is a good reference for vacuum trouble shooting.......... You should get between 17-22 in. hg. depending on your elevation above 2000 feet MSL or mean sea level. To perform this test hook vacuum gauge directly to manifold vacuum. 1. Low steady needle usually indicates leaky intake, a leaky vacuum hose, late timing, or incorrect camshaft timing. 2. If reading is 3-8 inches low and fluctuates at that low reading suspect an intake manifold gasket leak at intake port or faulty injector. 3. If the needle has regular drops of about 2-4 in hg. at a steady rate the valves are probably leaking. (Perform a compression check). 4. An irregular drop or down flick of the needle can be caused by a sticking valve or an ignition misfire. 5. A rapid vibration of about four in hg. indicates worn valve guides. 6. Slight fluctuation of one inch or so indicates ignition problems. 7. Large fluctuation perform a compression check. 8. If needle moves slowly through a wide range check for PCV issues. Hope this gives you a good place to start and helps you figure it out.

There should be some kind of oil trap on the block that prevents what you have going on and sounds plugged creating high pressure forcing oil to the intake via p.c.v. bet if you pull the intake hose off it has oil in it. Pull the cap and take a rag cover to keep the mess to a minimum have a friend bring the rpm up to 1500-1600 rpm and see if you get smoke out of the engine oil fill, and try to eyeball the back and see if it starts lessening if so cap put oil cap back on if it increcess google the engine type and see if it has a oil trap, or cyclone trap the name may not be correct it serves the same purpose to keep the oil out of the intake some you can clean the carbon out, some require rplacement like a bolt on cartridge.
