What would cause a flickering oil light that turns solid while breaking

The oil light flickers, goes out, turns solid when breaking. The mileage is 78,000

Only two reasons oil pump is going bad or oil sending unit is bad. Get a oil pressure test done to make sure the oil pump is pumping the right pressure if ok replace sending unit.

Sounds like it's only your oil sending unit, they're not that expensive, just replace it, it's probably easier, cheaper and 90% chance that will solve ur problem since you have low milage unless oil changes where not done frequently then you have a bigger problem.
