'96 Buick, Wont Turn on

Stop. Get a pro to look at it even if it’s a mobile tech. Messing with air bags is asking for trouble if you don’t know what you’re doing. The steering column and its components need to be checked out to find out what has went bad. Could be the key and tumblers but it could also be the ignition rack or the switch itself.

Most likely it's the rack and sector assembly inside of the steering column that's broken or jammed. When you turn the ignition key the rack and sector assembly is like a gear that moves. A rod is connected to that and the actual ignition switch, which is at the lower end of the steering column. The rod, as you turn the ignition key, moves the ignition switch to start and run the engine. The locking mechanism for the steering wheel is also tied into the rack and sector assembly. You can see a picture of the assembly on rockauto.com when you put in your vehicle information, select steering, then steering column repair kit. It's part number 4H1462. Whatever you do, do NOT rip the ignition lock cylinder out of the steering column. It will only make matters worse!! Jim

make sure the car is all the way in park and nothing like a purse or hair band if any small objects are preventing ig from going into park. if not then look at the bottom of the shifter for z small circle cap and pry ut open with a screwdriver then to release it use it to press down the white button that should override it and release the shifter the fluid is either brake power steering ir tranny look at where its ag and check fluid before driving
