The crank sensor tells the computer where top dead center is, and thus what cylinder is next to fire through the coil pack. The cam sensor accordingly helps the computer run the fuel injectors. In short, a diagnostic test through a GM Tech II type device should be considered to confirm or rule out sensor failure.
