Fuel Gauge on 2002 Buick Century Custom

Asked by GuruYP91N Mar 22, 2018 at 07:14 PM about the 2002 Buick Century Custom Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The fuel gauge on my 2002 Buick Century Custom is
giving erroneous readings. Whatever the gauge reads
when fuel is added to the tank, the gauge will continue to
read the same amount until the tank is empty. However, if
the engine is stopped by turning off the ignition key, the
gauge will automatically set itself to, and now show, the
correct amount of fuel. But, the gauge will not change
from that amount as fuel is used, and continues to show
the improper amount.

You may have a bad connection somewhere in the wires that transmit the signal. It is complicated because at least 3 things are involved. (1) the gage you see on the dash (2) the sending unit in the tank (3) the BCM that sees the tank reading, get information from the ECM on speed and fuel used and gives you a reading on your gas mileage, miles remaining on a tank of gas etc. It almost sound like the BCM is the problem but that could be expensive. Weigh you options and maybe just rely on the trip odometer.... If you have a 18 gallon tank and you get 25 mpg. you should be able to get 450 miles from a tank......but to be safe, refil the tank when you drive 350.
