Why does my car transmission periodically disengage from the engine?

Asked by Guru98R4CD May 24, 2022 at 08:54 PM about the 1997 Buick LeSabre Custom Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This problem is completely random, and doesn't seem to be related to speed
temperature, time driving, or what gear the transmission is in. When I shut the
engine off and restart it engages again

Most common is the shift solenoids, but you could also have an internal pressure problem, and that would require and overhaul.

How do I determine which of the problems you mention is the correct one? I should add that my car showed no sign of having transmission problems until this started.

A good live data scanner can show you if the TCM is sending the signal to the shift solenoids, if it is and the transmission still wont shift or drops gears then the chances are very high that the solenoids are weak. It should also show the resistance of each solenoid. Or have a good transmission shop do the testing.
