"No Crank" issue (VATS)

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

97 Lesabre: did a successful resistor bypass due to "No Crank" 3 yrs. ago. Issue started again recently;  Car generally starts first try, but sometimes go through 2 or 3 (occasionally 8 or 10) cycles  waiting each time for "Security" light to go out before a crank.  Sometimes security light will come back on for a while after a start with car continuing to run OK.  Was told it may be the start enable relay which may or may not be behind instrument cluster.  Started taking dash apart, which seems to be almost impossible to access behind cluster.  What to do?? Thanks...Larry

Note the diagram, check voltage and ground for starter motor. I don't know what testing you've done? Make sure battery and connections all good. Two voltage circuits for starter motor, one comes from the battery, hot all the time? The other should go hot with key in the crank position, you can see the other components in that circuit. The starter motor grounds through the engine block. That bypass will work for the pellet in the key, but, if the problem is elsewhere in the security system, it won't work. You could jump the starter motor just to see if the starter will crank the engine? That doesn't mean it will start. If you try that, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set. Safety is your responsibility.

Thanx for your input; whenever I get a "no crank" the Security light is on, when it finally goes out, car cranks over fine. problem somewhere in security system. Need to know how to access the start enable relay....
