Car stalls while going down the highway then restarts immediately and runs fine

Asked by jim Nov 10, 2017 at 01:18 PM about the 1999 Buick LeSabre Limited Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1999 Buick LeSabre won't shut off on going down
the highway if you switch it into neutral and hit the
key it starts right up and runs fine no codes with
the reader. May shut off once a day or once every
two weeks. But it seems to start right up
immediately when you hit the switch any
suggestions

I'm going to guess it is the ignition switch or shifter interlock. As you know, the car will not start unless the shifter is in P or N Then when you turn the key, that moves a rod to a switch at the base of the steering column that actually has the electrical contacts to start and run the car. I suspect that the ignition switch is out of adjustment...when you shift to N and then restart it moves the contacts enough to run again.
