1998 Silverado knocking on startup

Asked by Karterblaze Dec 02, 2017 at 09:58 AM about the 1998 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado Extended Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1998 Silverado 350 5.7L is knocking maybe
3sec on start up everytime unless the truck has
been parked for hours. Go to the store park come
back crank up, knocking again (at the most 3sec).
Stop to get gas, finish, crank up and knocking
again. The truck had 240k miles, but is very very
dependable. I can literally go any place that has
roads to it. I’m now using 10/30 penzoil. What is the
cause if this knock? which is getting louder

It’s possible the bearings have some slop going on. Had similar issues in my 96 a few years back. Noticed when I was changing the pan gasket that the crank was actually sliding back and forth on the journal and the bottom of the piston rod was actually smacking against the crank lobe. It only did it during start up like you described. Probly time to look into a freshen up or overhaul. Motor had close to 200k mikes at the time. Overhauled mine. Motor now has over 330k miles and still sting as ever
