Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1997 Chevy 1500 with power windows and door locks. The drivers inside handle
broke. I am in process of fixing it when the door shut. Now it will not open from the inside
(pulling on the rod behind the panel) or from the outside door handle. The lock barely
moves but the window works fine. Are there any tricks to open the door so I can finish my
repair?

Have you tried wiggling/pulling on the manual lock inside of door while trying to open it with the outside door handle?

the outside door handle is very loose so I think the latch rod for the ouside handle has fallen off too.

Remove screws from door panel and try to pop it away from the door enough to slide hand behind it to work latch. Going to be very tight squeeze but hopefully this will work for your.

Look at lock mech. Make sure it's in unlocked position. Then pull mech door handle is hooked to. If not unlocked door will not open.

When you need to take the door panel off when the door is shut to repair the handle or whatever, you can usually get at the seat hold down bolts .Remove them and if you can pull the seat somewhere else or rock it back to make some sort of room to pull the door panel out far enough to unhook it.Trust me,it works. Remember that you'll have the door open shortly so everything will be easy to put back together.

I have similar issue with my 2013 GMC SIERRA...Door will not open from inside or outside....Locking mechanism works fine manually or key fob.....Help! Is it a bad/disconnected cable...how do you get panel off when you cannot open door? Looking for helpful video...

The cable broke while trying to open. The door won’t unlock until the latch pull returns back to the rest position. Pull the door panel back as far as you can. Try to find the cable receiver on the latch. Push it towards the latch and it should allow the outside handle to operate. I had to create a hole to see what was up. But the latch is accessible through a hole about 1/2inch big. Good luck.
