I have 1997 chevy pickup with a vortec 350. The PRNDL light (red light) is off and the RPM gauge quit and the transmission starts in high gear. what would cause that

sounds like fun, have someone with a scanner check out what the sensor outputs are. I would check if it registers a RPM and vehicle speed. Your trans is electronically controlled. Uses inputs from TPS, RPM, and Vehicle speed. Not to mention the gear selector. Maybe the Trans computer kicked the bucked. Definatly something electrical.

After thought, check any fuse related to trans, instrument panel, PCM/ECU, and gauges
