Shifter for auto trans won't stay in gear selected

Asked by Todd Jun 18, 2015 at 03:30 PM about the 1990 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Scottsdale Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The shifter will not stay in park reverse or
drive if you let go of it it will drop down into
1st gear. If you hold it in drive it drives fine
shifts fine. To back up you have to hold the
shifter in the reverse position. What could
cause this and how to fix it?
