Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1991 Chevy Lumina 3.1.....the gas gauge said it ran out of gas. I got it
to crank long enough to get me to gas station. It stopped at $21 like it was a
full tank. I went to leave station and car cut off. It kept cutting off every time I
would get about twenty feet. I then realized my gas gauge was still reading
empty. Finally, the car wasn't reading that it has gas in it so it now it won't
start. Any suggestions??

Trying tapping on the fuel tank and cleaning fuel filter. Could have picked up trash and floats could be sticking

Since the fuel gauge and fuel pump both run off the same wire assembly, maybe that plugin has worked loose or there's a bad ground, making them both fail simultaneously. If $21 "filled it up", it was still half full I figure....you did not run out of gas.

Like Js08016 suggests, a quick test of the fuel pump is too turn the key on and listen for the pump to prime up. Do this without starting the engine. If it's not buzzing up, go to your under hood fuse block on the passenger side of engine bay and check fuse #3 (20 amp) and relay # 12, they run the pump. Even if an old pump runs, it will cut in and out when it's close to total failure. Also check your fuel filter and that would be a good time to confirm some fuel pressure, both before and after the (clogged?) filter. Changing a fuel pump is not my favorite task so I don't want to wrong on this one. Take your time and make a good diagnosis. Be careful working with gasoline. Good Luck.
