Is it possible to be very low on transmission fluid without a leak? When you step on the accelerator the car does not go into gear. When you press down on the accelerator  the RPMS goes up and then there is a loud thump and the car goes into gear.

Check the fluid level it may be low. A sensor could also be the problem. You may have to replace or rebuild the transmssion.
