I don't know why but I suspect you will be visiting a trans shop to get it fixed. Whenever I have had to rock my car out of snow, I never put it in reverse. I merely rock the car forward in drive and then take my foot off the gas and let the car roll back. When it stops roling back, I again drive forward as far as it will go and ease off allowing the car to roll back. I keep repeating and each sequence usually takes me a little farther until I am eventually free. Try it next time and you might save your trans. Note, this does not work in ice, only snow.
