check engine light mystery

Asked by Michael Jul 16, 2017 at 09:23 AM about the 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight 4 Dr LS Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

ok this all started about 2 weeks ago. First the check engine light came on
out of no where. didn't feel any difference in how the car was running or
anything. Then the car started to act like it didn't want to start and would go
from clicking to nothing to starting. I had it tested and it was reading that it
was running (lean). Then the car wouldn't started at all if it sat for awhile so i
had the battery tested (bad). Replaced the battery and refilled the gas tank
for the up coming week. Check engine light went off.  This past weekend the
gas got low again (don't know if that has anything to do with anything) but
check engine light came on again with same reading. Refilled the tank and a
few hours later the light went off. Any ideas? Thank you for your time, Mike

Have the trouble codes read and then the light won't be such a mystery. I suspect an issue with the EVAP system.
