We have a 91 Olds Royale - veh starts and dies when put in gear

Asked by garytoni25 Apr 08, 2015 at 08:15 PM about the 1991 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight Royale 4 Dr STD Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We just had the control module & ignition coil replaced.  The car then had to be
disconnected from the battery for 10 minutes and  hooked back up.  The car started at
the shop over and over. My son took car tonight and vehicle broke down.  Car starts but
when it's put into gear, it stalls out.     Any ideas?  Thanks!

check for vacuum leaks and scan the computer for codes. you can google "how to do gm obd1 scan" it is fairly easy and requires only a paper clip while you count some check engine light flashes. these cars have been known to have problems with the tcc or torque converter control solenoid. it locks the torque converter in at highway speeds for better fuel mileage, but if they malfunction and the tcc stays locked then the car will do what you describe. google the location on the tranny and unplug the electrical connector to it. if the problem "fixes" then the tcc is bad. they are expensive to replace, mainly labor. you can drive the car with them disabled, but you will lose gas mileage. hope this helps, Mike.
