1996 Oldsmobile Regency Elite parking brake will not release on left rear wheel. It has leading/trailing shoes with a single spring return. Depressing the parking brake petal will not release it. I have it on 2 jack stands trying to figure out how to remove the left drum. Right rear drum wheel turns easily in both directions, but the left rear won't budge! do not see anyway to solve this. I can not use brake adjusting tool on this type of brake. Help Anyone? Thanks.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car on jack stands. Both wheels off ground. Right rear wheel rotates easily in
both directions but left rear will not budge. The drum brake is a GM
leading/trailing type with a single spring. No way to use brake adjusting tool
to turn sprocket. I have pumped the parking brake pedal to release with no
affect. I have disconnected parking brake cable to release tension, but it
remains locked. I can not remove the drum because it is applied. Anyone
help? Thanks.  The car has 24,000 actual miles and otherwise in perfect
condition! Always garaged.

This is common. From the beginning these models had brake issues first with the brake not holding. Second with the front caliphers failing. Final solution of the engineers gave you the brake that won't release. Solution: Because the placement of the brake itself and the angle and limited contact area it is almost impossible to disengage once it the pedal is at the lowest. You need 2 people to pull this off: Person 1 sit in the driver seat start the car put it in drive and apply the regular brakes. Person 2 gets a sturdy louisville slugger baseball bat and opens the driver's door positioning themselves outside the car. Person 2 places the handle of the baseball bat end flat against the parking brake pedal. Make sure it does not slip off and then from outside the car person 2 can easily get enough leverage to disengage the damn brake. Step 2; DONT USE THE PARKING BRAKE!!
