Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Engine started to run on 3 cylinders . It would run perfect for a few miles
and then run on three sometimes it would only do it for 20 miles and then
maybe 10 miles. Engine light was on solid prior to the problem. Had
computer say it was the mass air sensor. A few days later this problem
started and while it was missing the engine light started to go off and on,
Removed mass air sensor and cleaned with correct cleaner. Problem
continues. I am baffled and so ie the Saab mechanic

Codes? You might have to leave a code scanner attached while it is running, if it is not retaining codes.
I appreciate your answer but I would have to drive almost 25 miles to find a shop that can do this. I am 85 and live on my social security and was hoping i could find someone who might have experienced the same problem. I am a little hesitant to drive it that far.
A local AutoZone can and will pull the codes for you for free. (They're hoping to sell you a part or 2 !!) Code would help us pinpoint the issue. Most ignition related issues with the 2.3T 4 cyl. is the direct ignition cassette. They're a known weak spot. Eeuromotors sells new ones. About $200 aftermarket, and more for OEM. Also you must use the proper NGK plugs for the car. they're expensive, at about $10 each on amazon
This is my eighth Saab and I have had problems with the ignition cassette before. My 97 CSE they had to be replaced twice. Once one it just dies which was the computer at the end of the cassette and the other only one cylinder and it was one of the coils. We have pulled the codes but it comes up the mass oxygen sensor of which I have cleaned. But of course that does not mean it is broken. I do lean towards the ignition cassette. I have never used NKG plugs and my cars always ran fine, I hate to purchase a cassette and find out its the oxygen sensor. I hope someone can help.
I need to add that there is a light white vapor out of the exhaust and fuel that has not ignited. Smells strong
