i have a 97 subaru impreza outback sport 2.2l and not sure the proper name but the axle gears in the transmission when out.

in my subaru i hear this grinding sound and i've narrowed it down to the
transmission and i wanted do know the name of the part so that i can replace
it. also my car is an automatic.

Hmmmm. Since you're sure (?) it's not the DOJs, then either its the carrier bearings INSIDE the trans or the trans itself. Regardless, just swap in a used trans, as the labor to replace the inner bearings isn't worth the risk of screwing it up.

I'm sorry what is DOJ and I figured it was the gears or bearings inside cause the granny fluid has what looks like rust or metal in it.
