P1316 is a random misfire code for a jaguar. There are many of causes for a p1316 code. Everything from a Spark plug, coil pack, timing chain, and even oil pressure. Yes oil pressure. The 4.2 v8 is a VVT(variable valve timing) engine. The valve timing or in other words the cams are adjusted by chain tensioners. Chain tensioners that are pumped up or let down with oil pressure. The VVT solenoid and valve timing cover direct oil to the top or bottom of the tensioner. This either slightly shortens the timing chain or slightly lengthens the chain. This is where the p1316 code comes in. I have read the forums on the p1316 code and most of them get solved. How ever their are a few that haven’t been solved. If all you have is p1316 code and no other codes to go with it, or a p1316 code with just a p0300 P0301 etc...Your probably in the same boat. I recently had this p1316 code on a 2003 jaguar 4.2 s type. It plagued me for a month. Couldn’t figure it out. Until I stop assuming that the problem was with the spark , ,fuel, and air. Took the entire engine apart to leave no stone unturned and what I found was a VVT valve body timing cover and solenoid that was plugged. Not allowing the cams to be adjusted. There is a very small filter screen in the valve body of the VVT timing cover. When it’s plugged the solenoid will open and close as normal but isn’t directing any oil, or a insufficient amount of oil. This was the only thing I found to be wrong with the engine. I cleaned the filter screen, and put the engine back together and left the VVT solenoids off. I Unplugged the coils and too. Then I turned the engine over to push out any particulates. I put my quick air attachment in the hole for the solenoid blew out the oil ports. Finished putting the engine back together and it ran perfect. So if nothing you try is working on the problem then I suggest you check the VVT system, and if that doesn’t work. Man up and take the entire engine apart. I promise you will find the problem and probably a few others that were fixing to kill your engine. Don’t stop taking the engine apart because you find a problem. It may not be what causing the p1316 code.
