I have an LR3 HSE, 2006. The hydraulic system stopped working so that the truck doesn't raise or lower its height and it won't go to 'suspension height' any more: is it safe to drive?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 LR3, HSE. Recently, it seems to have 'set' itself at a pretty decent height
and it won't move up or down. Normally I lower it for my Mom to get in, but the message
board tells me that height is not accessible. I'm not getting any other messages to tell me
what is wrong or why this happened. One LR mechanic told me that the compressors
weaken over time and so the trucks then stay up for safety. However, another told me that
at any time, while I'm driving, the height could adjust downward and that the truck will
come to an immediate _stop_: that sounds dangerous. Do you know if its true and what
the likely cause of this is? Thanks everyone!

It's the compressor. It's common for them to crap out. A new one is $600.00. A good used replacement is $150.00. Fix it and then sell it. It's a money pit.

Thank you, Mark. The dealership told me a new one would be $1300. I'm the original owner and have only had one other repair issue with the truck about two years ago. For me, its been trouble free until now. Would you be able to tell me if a regular mechanic can do this work safely? Also, Does the compressor failing cause or lead to other damage: is that the reason you are saying I should sell and that its a money pit? The reason I ask is that its been super-reliable for me, but I'm going through very tough times, and need to find the wisest and _safest_ path. I really appreciate your advice and information on this. Thank you.
