noise when braking

Bought this 2002 MDX yesterday. It was a salvage with extensive rear end damage. It has all been repaired.  mileage 75000.  When applying the brakes I get a weird noise in the dashboard area sounds like tape being eaten in tape player! Sometimes very gentle braking does not appear to make the noise.  It does not seem to be coming from the outside since when I roll down the windows it doesn't sound outside.  Also the cruise control doesn't work. Could they be related issues

issues are not related, the cruise control has to do with the speed sensors and the throttle position sensor, all electrical. you could just have something like a rock or something in your front brakes or a brake pad that is getting very thin.

check the power booster and master cylinder, both are mounted on the firewall under the hood.
