why or what is causing  vtm-4 and check engine light 2002 acura mdx. after a few minutes if I turn the vehicle off and restart, the vtm-4 light goes out but the check engine light remains on

You just need to have the vehicle scanned for any trouble codes. This would tell you what the problem is. You can have this done at an auto parts store, write the codes down.

The valves need to be adjusted. Its stupid but mine did the same thing.

all depends there's a few problems that can cause that, engine light with vtm light on. can be: valves adjustment fuel to lean oxygen sensors the flex after y pipe before catalytic converter cleaning channels on intake manifold cover egr clothe gas that you use (recommended premium gas) all depends of the codes that is trowing at pcm i have one 2002 mdx with 535000 Km same happen to me then i realized that vtm light was like a safety that acura made on the pcm program.... many people drives with engine light on for many kilometers and when vtm comes on put the people afraid of damaging the car making them to take the car strait to the shop ( was told to me by my brother in law ex mechanic of honda ) first see what codes is giving to you them fix it
