Automatic headlights

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Automatic headlight system-is or is not the light sensor supposed to turn the headlights on at night? If so, what setting should the stalk switch be set at? I live in a city, and I have found myself driving at night without headlights (!), but the manual says absolutely NOTHING about the automatic headlight system. Either the sensor is non-functional, or, equally likely, I have the stalk switch set wrong.

Thanks. Suspicions confirmed. It turns out ( I checked after sending the question in) that there is no "Auto" setting on the switch in a 2007 Matrix. Which means that-I think-everything is supposed to come on when the key is turned, and if it's dark, the headlights should come on along with the daytime running lights. When the key is turned. That is NOT happening, so I must need a new sensor. Thanks for an authoritative opinion.
