4 or 5 speed?

Asked by awbsman Mar 23, 2010 at 06:46 PM about the 1988 Pontiac Fiero Base

Question type: General

I recently received a 1988 V6 Fiero.  How can I tell if this is a 4 or 5 speed?  The manual transaxle has a dipstick at the front of the unit.  Also, what is a good oil for this.....probably hasn't been changed in awhile.

The 88 only came stock with a 5 speed. It was either Muncie (MG2) or Isuzu (MT2). You can look for that ID # on the transmission or on the SPI sticker on the inner fender well in the front compartment.

GM has a specific transaxle fluid to use takes 4-5 qts depending on the transaxle. GM part# 12345349 I think they call it syncromesh fluid..kinda expensive too!!

Brian, thanks for the info...just picked up this and know very little about this car. Haven't found the recommended oil yet..another post said the pennzoil syncromesh was working for him.

The fluid can be found at any auto parts store.don't worry you can use the aftermarket brands.congrats on joining the fiero world

If it's a V6 then more likely than not it's a 5 speed, to make sure next to the shifter there should be a gear map showing where each gear is

You have the Muncie/Getrag 5 speed. If you don't then someone has swapped your engine or trans and you'll have to go off of the #.
